What is a cane?

A cane is a medical device designed to assist elderly people, those with reduced mobility, or anyone who has difficulty moving around. A walking cane not only provides extra support but also helps maintain balance, reducing the risk of falls.

Often referred to as a “third leg,” a cane can help you regain your independence, whether walking indoors or outdoors.

A cane is a very useful walking aid! But do you know how to use it properly? Or how to choose the cane that best suits your needs?

How to use the cane correctly?

If you use only one cane

If you are able to place both feet on the ground, a simple walking cane is sufficient. To use your cane correctly, place it beside you on the side of the leg that bears the most weight. This will help reduce pressure on the leg or hip causing pain. You should move your cane forward at the same time as your weak or affected leg.

When going up stairs, place only your healthy leg on the first step, then bring your cane and weak leg onto the same step.

Conversely, when going down stairs, place your cane and weak leg on the first step, then move your healthy leg onto the same step.

If you use elbow crutches

If you are not allowed to place one of your feet on the ground, you will need a walking aid that provides full support. Using crutches is therefore necessary. To start walking, place both crutches slightly in front of you at the same time, then step forward with your healthy leg. Under no circumstances should you hop on one foot.

Important:

  • It is essential to regularly replace the non-slip tips on your cane or crutches for safety.

  • Walking with one or two crutches may require training with a physiotherapist.

What are different types of crutches?

Simple walking stick

There is a wide range of walking canes available: wood, metal, polymer, and more, to meet the needs of everyone. FDI has chosen to manufacture canes using materials that are both lightweight and durable: an aluminum shaft and a plastic handle with a soft section for maximum user comfort.

This cane is adjustable thanks to the holes along the shaft. The pin system provides a 2.5 cm adjustment range. Additionally, this cane is very light and compact (see our Soft Step model).

Elbow crutches

Les cannes anglaises, également appelées béquilles, sont destinés aux utilisateurs n’ayant pas le droit poser un pied par terre

They are more stable than standard canes and also provide dual support for the hand and forearm (see our crutch ranges: Access, Premium, or Technique).

Our ERGODYNAMIC crutches, equipped with an integrated shock absorber, make walking smoother and protect users from hand, arm, or shoulder discomfort. These crutches are highly valued by long-term users.

How to chose the grip ?

Choosing a handle that perfectly fits your hand and height is essential !

Your grip should be secure and provide excellent support.

FDI offers three types of handles:

Classic plastic grip

Classic Handle:
This handle features a traditional, classic design. It can be held in either direction, suitable for both right- or left-handed users. It is ideal for those who need light to moderate support.
Note: The shape of this handle may be slippery.

Soft-Grip Handle (“Comfort” type):
A handle with a soft, non-slip coating for enhanced user comfort. Like the plastic handle, it can be used in either the right or left hand.

Double-Layer Soft Handle (“Opti-Comfort” type):
A handle with a perforated design that allows air circulation, preventing heat buildup. Features a non-slip system for improved safety and comfort.

For elbow crutches

The handle is extended with a counterweight at the back of the forearm, allowing for much more support than a standard cane.

All handles can be swapped on any FDI cane model.

Which crutch is the right height for me?

The choice of your cane’s height depends on your habits as well as your doctor’s advice.

However, here is the cane size that corresponds to your height:

Which crutch is best suited for my weight?

Each cane is designed to withstand different levels of weight:

  • The SOFT STEP cane can support up to 120 kg

  • Crutches can support up to 130 kg

It is recommended to choose the ERGODYNAMIC cane size according to your weight:

  • Size S: for users under 60 kg

  • Size M: for users between 60 and 75 kg

  • Size L: for users between 75 and 130 kg

Essential accessories that enhance user comfort:

  • Wrist strap: prevents your cane from slipping out of your hand.

  • Tripod base: allows your cane to stand upright on its own.
